#Week 10 Podcasting and YouTube

Week 10, the final week. I went to Podcast alley and subscribed to two feeds, one called "Music & coffee" (Music & Coffee is a new channel covering 'everything music.' Grab a cup of coffee or your beverage of choice and listen to the latest news, interviews, discussions and more. ) and also one called the UC Radio Podshow (UC Radio is a Los Angeles based music podcast, produced by a survivor of the 80s and 90s Hollywood rock scene. Twice a week you get shows that include that best podsafe and indie music available, music news, hot political topics, strange current events and on Thursdays, an album referral to help you put todays music in perspective by understanding the roots of rock and roll. Volume is Good so Turn it Up!!!) It was easy to do this, and again great to have all of these links in one place. I also subscribed to the triple j radio podcast through their homepage. I think that i will continue to use these feeds to listen to podcasts, as i have been wanting to do so for a while, especially the jjj one.

I have used You Tube quiet a bit before to find music clips etc but it was interesting to see what else is available. I watched the preview for New Moon, based on the book by Stephenie Meyer:

and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland trailer:

I can think of a few ideas for using You tube as a work tool, we could video storytime and put them online, or also author talks. In this way it could become another way of publicizing the library service and what we have available.

#Week 9 Books & Reading

Week 9 and books and reading of course a favorite topic......so i was excited to join Librarything. I made my page :http://www.librarything.com/catalog/mysskitn and started adding books when i found a new book by one of my favorite authors (Jen Lancaster) which i didn't know was coming out. I was very excited by the links that showed which Melbourne bookstore which stock specific books. I can see many hours being spent here looking for books and reading other peoples reviews. Then I made a widget for my covers which i have added to my blog.

I also joint Goodreads, I didn't like it as much as there seemed more pages to get through with adding friends etc before you get to the books. I had to click through four pages then it asked me to take a compatibility test with my friends to see which books we had in common- all before I got to add books to my shelf. I defiantly preferred the format of Librarything.

#week 8 Productivity

This week i created an event on event Brite just to test it: http://www.eventbrite.com/publish?eid=502024569 it was very easy to use but I'm not sure that i would have a reason to use it very often.

Then i had a look at google reader, i subscribed to a couple of posts, including the one i found using technorati. I made an iGoogle page for myself which i really like. i have added a gadget, changed the colors and themes and added more items. I will use this as my home page from now on. Here it is: http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en

Next i had a look at the web 2.0 awards for 2008 at: http://www.seomoz.org/web2.0/short
I explored the category of Food, so went to http://www.urbanspoon.com/ and found a place that serves brunch close to my home which i will check out, and ifoods which has cooking videos you can watch http://www.lookandtaste.com/ i found some yummy inspiration there including this fab video recipe for brownies:http://www.lookandtaste.com/desserts/Chocolate-Brownies/88/
YUMMY!!

The other category I checked out was books, I'd already looked at librarything so checked out Lulu: http://www.lulu.com/ which helps authors publish their own books and also sells books and ebooks. Great site, also Bibliohttp://www.biblio.com/ which is a great site that helps you source copies of rare or out of print books. I looked for a first edition copy of The caine mutiny one of my dad's favorite books and found quiet a few options.
i think this week has been really useful in that there are quiet a few things i will continue to use.

#week 7 Tagging etc

I spent a bit of time playing with Del.icio.us which is an amazing site, it allows to you to organise your bookmarks and add tags to them. i created a page there http://delicious.com/mysskitn
and i think i will defiantly continue to use it and add more contenet to it.
I had a look at http://technorati.com/ and explored some blogs. I started by searching for one of my favorite autors blogs, and couldn't find it on there but did end up finding another interesting site: http://conversationsfamouswriters.blogspot.com/ it's a cute blog based on what a woman living in california reads. i enjoyed reading it and will probably keep up with it. I think technorati would be an intersting place to explore when i wanted to find some new blogs to look at.

#week 6 Fun stuff

This week i decided to have a play with rollyo to create a search engine just for me. I had a bit of trouble doing this because i was it kept crashing but eventually i got there. Of course it was made up of lots of my favorite online shopping sites, great for when i want to compare prices or browse.....
Then i went and had a play with last fm because i really enjoy lots of different music and i thought i t might be a good way for me to find some more I'd like. i found some cool music by Gillian Welch & David Rawlings,( see picture) I'd listened to her by herself before and really enjoyed it. i also like hip hop and found a group called Funkoars who are similar to the Hilltop hoods. i think i will use last fm a lot as it seems to be a great tool to find new artists.

#Week 5 Photos & images

I have created a flicker account to store my images but was not convinced that that was the best way to go i found it a bit clunky. I seemed to have trouble navigating and it took me a while to even work out how to tag photos. I prefer to add photos to my facebook page or twitter.
Here's the link to my flicker:http://www.flickr.com/photos/mysskitn/ I did take a photo of a display i have done at Ashburton which i'm hoping to post ont the Flicker 365 days album. I have put it in my set for now with a tag for Boroondara.
Then i tried photo bucket with clearly impressive results:

# Week 4 RSS Feeds

I have discovered the usefulness of RSS feeds, i had thought they were complicated but Elizabeth explained it so well that it was easy. I have signed up for a bloglines feed, and found a couple of my favorite authors pages. I was a bit worried that all of this activity and stuff to look at will lead to more obsession on my part and more time spent here but mabye because it's more organised it will be quicker and easier. So now i can check out my favorite authors blogs all from one place. I have also used bloglines to put a blogroll on the sidebar of my blog.

# Week 3 Social Networking

Clearly social networking is not a problem for me, i have facebook and twitter on my phone and update both regularly. I enjoy being able to communicate whilst I'm doing other things. Although I use facebook mainy because most of my friends are on there, I actually prefer twitter. I have learnt how to upload photos (or twitpic) and link my blogs etc. I did have twitter linked to facebook to automatically update my status but i decided not to keep it in the end as it was updating my status too often.

Techno gal...the beginning

Ok so here's the story so far, having been wanting to learn to blog for a while now i joined the web 2.0 program thinking it will help. Which clearly it has - I've blogged about my obsession with all things colorful and fashionable http://thegirlwiththepinkumbrella.blogspot.com/and have used that knowledge to go on and hopefully do a tiny bit of good for the world by supporting the Movember cause in my own way to raise money http://mofashionista.blogspot.com/

But web 2.0 is about more than blogging and while i have been quietly working away behind the scenes, seriously i have been, no one really knows about it. So here is blog number 3- the adventures of techno gal or how i tried to sort my way through the tangled web of html, rss feeds, tagging and various other technological things. I will try very hard not to mention fashion, coffee or dogs but i can't promise anything-but knowing me it will be colorful :)

So i guess in a way we're going back to the start......
